HR House

Barrington Rhode Island

Existing Condition: a) A two story residence on a corner lot one block from the Warren River b) A narrow sunroom to the East of the house serving as a “third entrance”.

Objectives: a) Provide acoustically separate living and working spaces b) Integrate a Second Story office c) Provide views of the Warren River from both levels d) Provide a more effective Entry to the house via the Sunroom.

Strategy: a) Capitalize on the eastern “morning light” to provide spaces distinct from others in the home b) Examine the threshold between House and Addition for storage and acoustic separation.c) Provide greater width to improve the view to the Warren River.

Concept: a) Two interlocking gabled structures. One, a two story tower; the other a simplistic volume reminiscent of the cottages which had once occupied this area.

Solution: a) The compact footprint of the first floor provides three, spatially distinct zones. An efficient Entrance Lobby with Work and Living Room spaces distinguished by a single column supporting the tower above. b) The “Tower” form of the addition provides a more distinct, albeit discrete entrance to the house.
